One of the world’s oldest civilisations, modern Iran can trace its roots to the ancient Elamite Kingdoms of the 4th century BC. Today, Iran is the 18th most populous state on earth and 18th largest economy by PPP.
Iran is a major regional power, and a founder member of the UN, OIC, and OPEC. Situated on the Caspian Sea and the Straits of Hormuz–and sharing land borders with eight nations including Turkey, Iraq and Pakistan –Iran enjoys an excellent strategic location.
An ‘energy superpower’, Iran is home to the world’s fourth largest oil industry and the world’s second largest reserves of natural gas (after Russia). Today oil is responsible for around 45% of Iran’s total budget.Iran’s oil industry has been under government control since the Revolution of 1979, and around 60% of Iran’s economy remains in state hands.
In recent years the Iranian government has announced plans to modernise the economy and encourage foreign investment. The initiative has started to bear fruit –Iran has succeeded in making exciting developments in the pharmaceutical, biotech and nanotechnology industries, for example.
